Field Notes

Slow travel, film photography and notes from the road.

Autumn light on the archipelago

The ferry left before sunrise. By the time we reached the outer islands the fog had lifted and the granite was glowing a soft orange. I shot two rolls of Portra 400 in an hour and still felt I had missed the best of it.

Lesson of the day: meter for the shadows, the highlights on this film forgive almost everything.

Developing at home, a year later

A year ago I bought a second-hand tank and a thermometer. Since then about sixty rolls went through the kitchen sink. The results are not perfect, but the process slows me down in a way the camera alone never did.

Consistency came from boring things: the same water temperature, the same agitation rhythm, the same timer.

Walking the old railway line

Forty kilometres of abandoned track, now a gravel path through pine forest. Three days, one small backpack, one camera, one lens. The rule was simple: no more than twelve frames a day.

About

This is a small personal journal. No ads, no tracking, no newsletter. New entries appear when there is something worth writing about.

Gear

A fully mechanical 35 mm rangefinder, a 40 mm lens, a light meter app and too many film canisters in every jacket pocket.
